Holiday Cottage in Dumfries and Galloway

Forest Edge is a traditional 19th century granite cottage situated in a quiet location on the edge of the small town of Dalbeattie, with views over the surrounding hills. Just over the garden wall lie miles of walks through the lovely Dalbeattie Town Wood - linking in to a network of paths and cycleways leading down to the beautiful Colvend Coast. The cottage itself has been tastefully extended and refurbished to provide a comfortable home-away-from-home for up to 4 people.

Accommodation
The cottage has gas central heating and double-glazing throughout, making it warm and cosy at any time of year.
Accomodation includes one double and one twin bedroom on the first floor (each with duvets), while on the ground floor there is a large, comfortably furnished lounge with open fire, tv, dvd and cd player; a well-equipped modern dining-kitchen, with electric cooker, washer, microwave and fridge and a good supply of cooking utensils etc.; and a bathroom with electric shower. All bedlinen and towels are provided. On request, we can also offer a highchair and travel cot for those with young children, at no extra cost - please supply your own child's bedding.
To the rear of the property, a good-sized garden, with patio seating area and pond, leads up to the woods at the rear, and offers views to the surrounding hills. If you are lucky, you may even see red squirrels and deer feeding in the garden. Please note the garden is partially terraced and may not be suitable for those with mobility problems, and small children should be supervised at all times.
Dog owners are welcome to bring a canine companion with them, at a small extra charge - we just ask you also bring their own bed, and do not allow them on sofas and soft furnishings. Unfortunately the garden is not fully enclosed, but there are ample dog-walking opportunities right on the doorstep.

Around and About
Dalbeattie is less than half an hour’s drive from Dumfries, the regional capital, on the Galloway Tourist Route to Ayr. Stranraer, with the ferry to Ireland, is within easy reach by car or bus.
Dalbeattie town, reknowned for its granite which has been used for many famous buildings throughout the UK and beyond, offers a good range of shops, pubs and eateries, and is only ten minutes walk away from the cottage. Castle Douglas (D&G’s Food Town), Gatehouse of Fleet and Kirkudbright (Artist’s Town) are all within half an hour’s drive, while Newton Stewart, Wigtown (national Book Town) and Moffat are also within easy reach by car.
Closer to home, the East Stewarty Coast (National Scenic Area) offers a variety of clifftop walks and lovely coastal villages, with Kippford and Rockliffe only ten minutes away - or about a 3 mile walk through the woods at the rear of the property, and Sandyhills, with its sandy beach, just a short drive further along the coast.
The area is ideal for walking, with a number of spectacular coastal paths on the doorstep, and even in mid-season you can often find your own secret beach. The nearby Galloway Forest Park and surrounding hills offer further opprotunities to enjoy the glorious scenery and wildlife of the area, including the Galloway Red Kite Trail. The more challenging terrain of the Galloway Hills (including the Southern Upland Way) is also within easy reach.
Just the other side of Dumfries is the reknowned widfowl sanctuary at Caerlaverock, winter home to thousands of migrating geese and waterfowl, with a number of smaller reserves closer to hand. History lovers will also enjoy exploring the numerous ancient sites around the local area, including Caerlaverock and Threave Castles and the poetically named Sweetheart Abbey. And of course we are ideally situated for those wishing to visit sites associated with Scotland’s nation poet, Robbie Burns, while American visitors will be sure to want to visit John Paul Jones' birthplace museum at Arbigland (just 20 minutes from the cottage).
If fishing is more your thing, the area offers ample opportunity, including nearby Loch Ken, which also boasts a small watersports centre. Just up the road at Barend is a riding stables, catering for all abilities. Mountain bikers will enjoy the ‘7 Stanes’ cycle routes right on the doorstep. There are a number of good golf courses within easy reach, and for children, local farms offer home made ice cream and the chance to visit the animals, with Mabie Farm Park just a short drive up the road.
