Situated right on the harbour at Garlieston, near Wigtown, ‘Water’s Edge’ is a stylish modern mews house enjoying views across the bay to the 18th century fishing village. The house is a stone’s throw from the beach, and will sleep 4 people in 4 star comfort.
Accommodation
‘Water’s Edge’ features one twin and one double (en suite) bedroom and house bathroom on the first floor. Downstairs is a spacious and airy open plan living area, with well-equipped modern kitchen, dining area and comfortable lounge with digital tv and dvd player. The house is finished to a high standard, with a good range of equipment and comfortable modern furnishings throughout, and of course is fully centrally heated. Views of the sea can be enjoyed from most windows, but most strikingly from the balcony of the master bedroom at the rear. More photos can be found at our Photo Album.
To the front of the property is a communal courtyard area overlooking the slipway, leading down to allocated parking for one car. Further on street parking is available nearby. A small children's play area is situated within the development, within view of the front door.
One dog is welcome at a small extra charge – just ensure it has its own bed and is not allowed on beds or sofas, and please ensure your dog is kept on the lead in the communal areas of the development.
Parents of small children should note that much of the nearby harbour is unfenced, and ensure children are suitably supervised at all times.
Around and About
Garlieston, once a bustling small port, is now a sleepy fishing village beginning to develop as a marina for pleasure craft (we hope to secure mooring rights for one small craft in time for the Summer of 2010). The village dates from the 18th century, and has two well-stocked small general stores, post office and village pub. There is a good beach – partly shingle, with rough sand at the Northern end – and delightful coastal walks, from which a wealth of wildlife can be seen – including seals basking on the rocks of nearby Rigg Bay.
A short drive away, the medieval county town of Wigtown (10 miles) is now better known as Scotland’s National Booktown, while the nearby Burgh of Whithorn, with its ruined priory, founded by Saint Ninian, is known as the earliest Christian settlement in Scotland. The surrounding area is rich in ancient history, with numerous pre-historic stone circles and iron age forts, as well as sites associated with martyred 17th century Covenanters. The coastline is very beautiful, with views to Cumbria and the Isle of Man and a number of marvellous sheltered beaches, such as that at Monreith, which never get crowded. The quiet by-roads are ideal for cyclists, while wildlife enthusiasts will find much of interest, including Wigtown Bay Local Nature Reserve, well-known for over-wintering wildfowl, and CCTV coverage of Galloway’s nesting ospreys at Wigtown County Buildings.
A little further afield, Newton Stewart (15 miles) is known as the Gateway to the Galloway Hills, where keen walkers will find many opportunities to get off the beaten track. Popular tourist attractions such as Portpatrick and the Mull of Galloway (Scotland’s most southerly point) are within easy reach for a day trip.
There are a number of good places to eat within a short drive - notably the Bladnoch Inn, near Wigtown, (9 miles) and Steam Packet Inn at Isle of Whithorn (6 miles) - and a good range of local shops at Whithorn and Wigtown, with two small supermarkets at Newton Stewart. Whisky officianados will not want to miss the Bladnoch Distillery (the most southerly in Scotland).
